Preparing for Wisdom Teeth Removal

Proper preparation can help make your wisdom teeth removal appointment and recovery more comfortable.

Before Your Appointment:

  • Follow all instructions provided by your dental team.
  • Tell our office about your medications, allergies, and relevant medical history.
  • Arrange for a responsible adult to accompany you if sedation or anesthesia is planned.
  • Plan to rest after your procedure and avoid strenuous activities.
  • Follow any specific eating, drinking, or medication instructions provided before your appointment.

On the Day of Your Wisdom Teeth Removal

Follow your dental team's instructions carefully on the day of your procedure. Comfortable clothing and proper transportation arrangements can help make the appointment easier.

  • Arrive at the scheduled time.
  • Follow all instructions regarding eating, drinking, and medications.
  • If sedation is planned, confirm that your transportation arrangements are in place.
  • Plan to rest following your procedure.

Protect the Blood Clot

A blood clot forms in the extraction area after wisdom teeth removal. Protecting this clot is an important part of the early healing process.

Avoid:

  • Drinking through a straw.
  • Smoking or using tobacco products.
  • Forceful rinsing or spitting.
  • Touching the surgical area with your fingers or tongue.
  • Strenuous physical activity during the initial recovery period.

Bleeding

Some bleeding or mild oozing may occur following wisdom teeth removal.

  • Bite gently on the gauze provided by your dental team.
  • Replace gauze as directed.
  • Keep your head elevated when resting.
  • Avoid strenuous activity during the initial recovery period.
  • Contact our office if bleeding is heavy, persistent, or concerning.

Swelling

Swelling is common after wisdom teeth removal and may become more noticeable during the first few days.

  • Apply a cold pack as directed by your dental team.
  • Use cold therapy during the initial recovery period as instructed.
  • Keep your head elevated when resting.
  • Follow your provider's instructions regarding medications.

Pain & Discomfort

Some discomfort is expected after wisdom teeth removal. Your dental team will provide instructions for managing your recovery.

  • Take medications only as directed by your dental provider.
  • Follow all prescription and medication instructions carefully.
  • Do not take more medication than recommended.
  • Contact our office if pain becomes severe or continues to worsen.

Eating & Drinking After Surgery

Choose foods that are comfortable to eat and avoid disturbing the surgical areas during your recovery.

Recommended:

  • Choose soft foods that require minimal chewing.
  • Drink fluids as directed by your dental team.
  • Gradually return to your normal diet as you feel comfortable and as directed.

Avoid:

  • Hard, crunchy, or sharp foods that may irritate the surgical area.
  • Very hot foods or beverages during the initial recovery period.
  • Drinking through a straw.

Oral Hygiene

Keeping your mouth clean is important during recovery, but the surgical areas should be treated gently.

  • Follow the brushing and rinsing instructions provided by your dental team.
  • Brush gently around the surgical area as directed.
  • Avoid vigorous rinsing during the initial recovery period.
  • Use any prescribed or recommended rinse only as directed.

Sutures (Stitches)

If sutures were placed during your wisdom teeth procedure, follow the instructions provided by your dental team regarding their care and follow-up.

  • Avoid pulling or touching the sutures.
  • Keep the surgical area clean according to your provider's instructions.
  • Attend any recommended follow-up appointment.

After Sedation or Anesthesia

If sedation or anesthesia was used, follow the specific instructions provided by your dental team.

During the initial recovery period:
  • Do not drive or operate machinery until you have been cleared according to your provider's instructions.
  • Avoid alcohol while recovering from sedation or anesthesia as instructed.
  • Have a responsible adult available if your dental team requires one.

Rinsing Instructions

  • Avoid vigorous rinsing immediately after treatment.
  • Do not forcefully spit.
